Europa im 14. Jahrhundert: die Pest wütet, Tausende fallen ihr zum Opfer. Inmitten des mittelalterlichen Chaos’ wird eine junge Frau festgenommen, welche unter dem Verdacht steht, als Hexe für die Ausbreitung der tödlichen Seuche verantwortlich zu sein. Um ihrem vermeintlichen Wirken Einhalt zu gebieten, beauftragt Cardinal D’Ambroise den Ritter Behman, sie ins Gefängnis zu bringen, wo ein geheimnisvolles Ritual auf sie wartet. Zusammen mit seinem Begleiter Felson begibt sich Behman auf die Reise. Doch der Auftrag erweist sich als gefährlicher und mysteriöser als angenommen, denn um das Böse zu besiegen, müssen beide durch die Hölle.
