Direkt nach Ende seiner Highschool-Zeit tritt Ron Kovic den Marines bei - ganz im naiven Glauben, seinem Land auf diese Weise am besten zu dienen. Die Army schickt ihn daraufhin in den Vietnamkrieg, wo er an einem aus Fahrlässigkeit resultierenden Massaker beteiligt ist, im unübersichtlichen Gefecht versehentlich einen Kameraden erschießt und sich schließlich – von der Brust bis zu den Füßen gelähmt – im Hospital wiederfindet. Psychisch schwer mitgenommen und für immer an den Rollstuhl gefesselt kehrt er zu Freunden und Verwandten in die Heimat zurück. Dort verteidigt er zuerst den Militäreinsatz und das eigene Engagement.
