
Das Schloss im Spinnwebwald
Dank des Einsatzes der beiden Hauptmänner Washizu und Miki kann ein Aufstand gegen den Fürsten Tsuzuki niedergeschlagen werden. Auf dem Weg zu Tsuzukis Schloss im Spinnwebwald begegnen die beiden einer mysteriösen Erscheinung, die ihnen prophezeit, dass Washizu schon bald Herr des Schlosses sein wird, ebenso wie später Mikis Sohn. Nach anfänglichen Zweifeln bewahrheiten sich andere Teile der Prophezeiung, wodurch Washizu in einen Konflikt zwischen seiner Loyalität und seinen Ambitionen gerät. Auf Drängen seiner Frau ermordet er schließlich Tsuzuki. Er wird Herr des Spinnweb-Schlosses, aber auch zunehmend von Ängsten und Zweifeln geplagt...

I think that this is a superb tragi-adventure story that stands out well amongst the numerous loose adaptations of Shakespeare that have been made over the years. Kurosawa takes the Scottish play and gives it the "Noh" treatment that delivers an enigmatic and tautly directed rendition of a story of betrayal, power and insanity.
