Der Buchexperte Dean Corso schwatzt einer Klientin eine wertvolle Don-Quijote-Ausgabe für einen Spottpreis ab. Hilflos dabei zusehen muss der gelähmte Gatte, der nichts anderes tun kann, als seine Finger zornig in eine Decke zu krallen. Weil biblische Gerechtigkeit aber sein muss, geht Corso dann als moderner Faust durch die Hölle. Im Auftrag des dubiosen Boris Balkan vergleicht er die letzten drei Exemplare eines Buches miteinander, das Mephisto nicht nur mitverfasst, sondern auch als versteckten Schlüssel zu seinem Reich genutzt haben soll.
