Der amerikanische Reporter Sydney Schanberg berichtet für die „New York Times“ aus Kambodscha über den Krieg im benachbarten Vietnam. Der einheimische Dolmetscher Dith Pranh ist ihm nicht nur ein unentbehrlicher Helfer, sondern inzwischen auch ein guter Freund geworden.
