Es ist das Jahr 10191. Das Weltall ist von den Menschen besiedelt und der herrschende Imperator Shaddam IV überträgt die Lehnsherrschaft über den Wüstenplaneten Arrakis, genannt Dune, an den Herzog Leto Atreides. Einzig dort kann das begehrte Spice, eine bewusstseinserweiternde Droge, gewonnen werden. Durch diese wird den Navigatoren des Imperiums die Raumfahrt mit Überlichtgeschwindigkeit ermöglicht und die Lebenserwartung verlängert. Doch der Herzog hat viele Feinde. Einer davon ist der sadistische Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, der mit allen Mitteln versucht die Familie des Herzogs zu vernichten, um so erneut die Herrschaft über Arrakis zu übernehmen.
