The Old Oak
Die glorreichen Zeiten liegen längst hinter dem alten Grubendorf im Nordosten Englands. Im The Old Oak genannten Pub treffen sich nun regelmäßig die Arbeiter, die einst unter Tage ihr Werk verrichteten und schließlich ihrer Meinung nach vom System verraten und ausgespuckt wurden. Doch auch diese Stammgäste reichen Pubinhaber TJ Ballantyne nicht, um den Laden vor dem Ruin zu retten. Unruhe in die vergessene Ortschaft bringt auch der Fremdenhass, der den ankommenden Geflüchteten aus Syrien entgegenschlägt. Die sollen in den zahlreichen leerstehenden Häusern des Ortes einquartiert werden und das stößt bei den Alteingesessenen auf wenig Verständnis. Nur TJ Ballantyne verschränkt nicht sofort die Arme, sondern freundet sich mit der jungen Syrerin Yara an. Gemeinsam feilen sie an einem Plan sowohl die Wogen zwischen beiden Lagern zu glätten als auch den Pub zu retten.
