1959, Vivian Bell, profesora de literatura inglesa, con un matrimonio sin futuro, llega a Reno, Nevada, para tramitar su divorcio de una manera rápida. Allí se alojará en un rancho para turistas. En él conocerá a Cay, una chica lesbiana, sin ambiciones, que trabaja en el casino. Ambas pasarán cada vez más tiempo juntas, consiguiendo que Vivian vuelva a sentir y vivir de nuevo.
