Finales de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Un hombre herido viaja en una caravana por una carretera de Italia, pero su estado es tan grave que se tiene que quedar en un monasterio deshabitado y semiderruido, donde se encarga de cuidarlo Hana, una enfermera canadiense. Su cuerpo está totalmente quemado a consecuencia de un accidente sufrido en África, pero todavía tiene tiempo para contarle la trágica historia de su vida.
