En el siglo XXII, la nave del capitán Adams viaja al remoto planeta Altair IV para rescatar a una expedición perdida. Al llegar, solo encuentran a dos supervivientes: el misterioso doctor Morbius y su hija Altaira, quienes viven aislados junto al icónico Robby, el Robot. Morbius les advierte de que una fuerza invisible y letal habita el planeta, la cual destruyó al resto de su tripulación y ahora amenaza a los recién llegados. El misterio se complica al descubrir que el subsuelo alberga la inmensa tecnología de los Krell, una avanzada raza alienígena extinta. Dato clave: La película es una brillante transposición al espacio de La Tempestad de William Shakespeare, donde Morbius representa al mago Próspero, su hija a Miranda, y el monstruo invisible encarna los peligros del subconsciente humano.
