Au tournant du siècle, Lódz, en Pologne, était un centre de fabrication de textiles au rythme rapide, regorgeant d'industriels acharnés et de conditions de travail dangereuses. Trois jeunes amis, un Polonais, un Juif et un Allemand, mettent leur argent en commun pour construire une usine. Le film suit leur quête impitoyable de fortune.
