Sadie Harper, étudiante au secondaire, et sa sœur cadette Sawyer se remettent du récent décès de leur mère. Elles n’obtiennent pas beaucoup de soutien de leur père, un thérapeute qui vit son propre deuil. Lorsqu’un patient désespéré débarque à l’improviste en quête d’aide à leur demeure, il y laisse une entité terrifiante qui traque les familles et se nourrit de la souffrance de ses victimes.
