È il 1950. William Lee è un americano sulla soglia dei cinquanta espatriato a Città del Messico. Passa le sue giornate quasi del tutto da solo, se si escludono le poche relazioni con gli altri membri della piccola comunità americana. L’incontro con Eugene Allerton, un giovane studente appena arrivato in città, gli mostra per la prima volta la possibilità di stabilire finalmente una connessione intima con qualcuno.
