Agli inizi del XVII secolo, il ronin (un samurai senza padrone) Hanshiro Tsugumo, si presenta alle porte della casa Iyi. Chiede che, data sua disgrazia, gli sia concesso un luogo dove commettere suicidio rituale. Con l'intento di dissuaderlo, l'intendente gli narra di un altro ronin, presentatosi qualche tempo prima con la stessa richiesta. Ma un'altra verità si cela dietro la ritualità del samurai...
