XXIII secolo. Viger, la minaccia distruttiva proveniente dallo spazio ed in cerca del "Creatore", costringe ad un affrettato intervento l'astronave Enterprise completamente rinnovata e ancora in fase di pre-rodaggio. In questa situazione il vecchio capitano Kirk, perso il feeling con la sua nave, sembra non essere il più adatto. Di fronte ai continui screzi con il giovin Capitano in seconda Decker, neanche la saggezza dei suoi vecchi commilitoni Spock e McCoy può molto. Ma quando il timoniere Ilia viene 'inglobata' da Viger - che 'restituisce' all'astronave una copia robotica della splendida ragazza che possa fungere da sonda tra lui e gli umani - le cose si mettono davvero male, soprattutto per Decker, di lei follemente innamorato...

To be fair, this film does pick up quite plausibly from the television series. The characterisations are roughly the same, if somewhat older - and that does help give it some cohesion; but the opening scene goes on interminably.
