Emma, una giovane molto intelligente che trascorre il tempo a combinare matrimoni nella sua piccola comunità. La ragazza è molto sfrontata e decide di far sposare il reverendo Elton con l'amica Harriet Smith. Mentre le due ragazze diventano amiche, Harriet viene corteggiata dal contadino Robert Martin, ma quando lui le chiede di sposarlo, Emma convince l'amica a rifiutare un matrimonio così sconveniente.
