Nella Berlino del '46, devastata dai bombardamenti e dalla miseria, un ragazzino che mantiene tutta la famiglia uccide per disperazione il padre malato e si dà la morte. Il ritratto di un paese in ginocchio attraverso la disperazione di un innocente. Nell'itinerario di Rossellini un'opera di transizione tra il neorealismo sociale e l'attenzione ai drammi esistenziali dell'individuo. La passeggiata del bambino attraverso una Berlino ostile e sconvolta è una grande pagina di cinema. Carlo Lizzani collaborò alla sceneggiatura e vennero utilizzati numerosi attori non professionisti. Il titolo è preso da L'année zero de l'Allemagne di E. Marin. Premiato al Festival di Locarno.
