Il giovane appassionato di informatica David riesce a collegarsi clandestinamente con varie reti informatiche, ma, quello che sembra solo un innocuo gioco, rischia di trasformarsi in tragedia quando un giorno, del tutto casualmente, riesce a dialogare con il computer che controlla e programma la difesa nucleare degli Stati Uniti. Convinto di avere a che fare con una società produttrice di videogiochi, David si lancia in un confronto che, in realtà, dà il via ai preparativi irreversibili per un attacco nucleare all'Unione Sovietica.
