Il capriccioso e dissoluto Enrico VIII vuole divorziare da Caterina d'Aragona, che non gli ha dato figli, per sposare Anna Bolena, di cui è innamorato. Per strappare l'assenso del papa, pretende l'aiuto di un gentiluomo molto religioso, stimato anche a Roma: sir Thomas More. Ma né gli onori né le minacce portano Moore (che pagherà con la vita) a cedere sul precetto dell'indissolubilità del matrimonio.
