La storia tragicomica di Ray, un chitarrista jazz assurto a fuggevole fama alla fine degli anni '30, secondo soltanto al grande chitarrista gitano Django Reinhart. Omaggio tenero e partecipato del musicista dilettante Woody Allen agli artisti dimenticati virtuosi, ubriaconi, scapestrati, eccentrici fino all'inverosimile. Delizioso il personaggio di Hattie la inseparabile compagna muta di Ray.
