L'uomo che volle farsi re
Daniel Dravot, ex-sottufficiale dell'esercito inglese, e il suo collega Peachy Carnehan, entrambi massoni, decidono, svanita ogni altra possibilità di far fortuna in India, di conquistarsi un regno tra le montagne del Kafiristan: una regione ignota agli europei ma sulla quale, più di venti secoli prima, aveva dominato Alessandro Magno. Dopo aver chiamato come testimone della loro impresa il giornalista Rudyard Kipling, Daniel e Peachy si mettono in viaggio, con un carico di fucili, verso la loro "terra promessa", che raggiungono dopo aver superato fiumi, montagne e ghiacciai.
