父・辰夫、祖父・源三と一緒に、北方四島の一つである色丹島に暮らしている10歳の淳平と7歳の寛太の兄弟。1945年に太平洋戦争が終わり、日本がポツダム宣言を受諾することに。その直後、ソ連軍が、択捉島、国後島、歯舞群島、色丹島に上陸して進駐し、淳平と寛太が通う学校にも兵士がなだれ込んでくる。やがて、二人はロシア人少女と心を通わせるようになるが……。
