1942年、ミュンヘン出身の若い女性ユンゲはヒトラーの個人秘書の職を得る。それから月日は流れて1945年、第2次世界大戦は大詰めを迎え、ヒトラーはごく限られた身内や腹心の部下たちとベルリンのドイツ首相官邸の地下要塞に逃げ、そこで不自由な生活を送る。敗北の気配が濃くなる中、ヒトラーはまだ反撃のシナリオを熱っぽく語るが次第に部下たちは彼から離反していき、ユンゲは歴史の証人としてその光景を静かに見守る。

"Downfall” (2004) is not a conventional war movie due to its downbeat subject and is more educational than entertaining, but it’s a necessary piece of the puzzle in understanding…
Though he might not much like the compliment, Bruno Ganz is superb as the Führer in this dramatisation of his last few days in Berlin. If you saw George Schaefer’s attempt at this, with Anthony Hopkins in the title role (1981) then you’ll already have the gist of what occurs, but this has an altogether less dramatic, more natural, feel to it. It helps, of course, that those of us watching know now…
