19世紀の半ば、スコットランドからニュージーランドへ写真結婚で嫁ぐエイダ。旅のお供は娘のフロラと一台のピアノ。エイダは6歳の時から口がきけず、ピアノが彼女の言葉だった。夫のスチュアートはそのピアノを重すぎると浜辺に置き去りにし、原住民に同化している男ベインズの土地と交換してしまう。ベインズはエイダに“ピアノ・レッスン”をしてくれればピアノを返すというが……。
