브룩클린에 있는 이태리 지역에서 살고 있는 토니 마네로(존 트라볼타 분)는 아버지의 실직으로 동네 페인트 가게에서 일을 하면서 생활비를 버는 처지이다. 그런 토니의 유일한 낙은 주말마다 디스코텍에 가서 춤을 추는 것. 멋진 춤솜씨 때문에 디스코텍에서 귀빈 대우를 받는 토니는 친구들과 함께 마음껏 젊음을 발산한다. 토니 일행은 경제적으로 여유가 없다는 점과 함께 이웃한 스페인계 마을 청년들과 늘 다퉈야 한다는 문제가 있다. 하지만 그런 문제들은 열정적인 춤을 출 때만큼은 잊혀지게 된다. 어느 날 토니는 디스코텍에서 멋진 춤을 추는 스테파니(카렌 린 고니 분)와 마주치게 되는데...
