1970년대 초 스코틀랜드 해안 지역의 순진한 소녀 베스는 북해 석유 채굴장에서 일하는 자유분방한 얀을 사랑한다. 동네 사람들의 반대에도 불구하고 두 사람은 결혼을 한다. 그러나 얀은 일 때문에 북해로 되돌아가게 된다. 하나님에 대한 자신의 간구에 의해 그들의 사랑이 천국에서 맺어진 것이라 확신하는 베스는 그가 돌아올 날 만을 손꼽아 기다린다. 그러나 얀은 사고로 인해 불구가 되고 만다. 그리고 얀은 베스가 스스로를 일상적인 삶으로부터 차단시킬까봐 걱정한다. 앞으로 침대 신세만 질 것을 알게 된 그는 베스에게 그녀가 애인을 갖는 것이 그의 회복에 도움이 될 것이라고 설득한다.
