전과자 자니 클레이는 샌프란시스코 경마장 강도 계획을 세우고 동료들을 모은다. 치밀한 준비 끝에 드디어 실행의 시간이 왔지만, 계획이 성공했다고 생각한 순간 예상하지 않았던 상황이 그들을 기다리고 있다. 라이오넬 화이트의 원작을 스탠리 큐브릭이 치밀하게 영화화한 걸작. 소설에서는 흔히 사용되어 왔던, 동시에 일어나는 사건을 시간을 반복해 순서대로 묘사하는 테크닉을 스크린에 옮겨 놓았으며, 범행 장면의 다이내믹한 연출 역시 놓칠 수 없는 부분이다.
