건달 루퍼트 펍킨은 스스로 타고난 코미디언이라고 생각하고 있는 배우 지망생이다. 화려한 데뷔를 꿈꾸는 그는 거물 코미디언 제리 랭포드에게 접근하기 위해 갖은 수단을 다 쓰지만 효과는 시원치 않다. 그가 탄 자동차에 무조건 올라탄 펍킨은 한번 연락하라는 한마디에 벌써 유명 인사나 된 듯 과대망상에 빠진다. 그러나 기회는 좀처럼 오지 않고, 마지막 수단으로 펍킨은 랭포드의 열광적인 여성팬을 동원해 그를 납치한다. 랭포드에게 권총을 들이대고 협박한 펍킨은 그로 하여금 제작자에게 깜짝 놀랄 미지의 인물이 랭포드 쇼에 출연하게 된다는 전화를 걸게 하는데...

A bit long-winded, but undoubtedly a very good movie. 'The King of Comedy' has a sturdy Robert De Niro lead performance, as well as solid support from Jerry Lewis and Sandra Bernhard. I enjoyed seeing the split from what actually happens and how De Niro's Rupert Pupkin views things via his dreams; especially with how merged they become by the end.
