6년전 경마 사기로 50만불을 잃은 로니간(Doyle Lonnegan: 올리버 리드 분)은 곤돌프(Gondorff: 잭키 글리슨 분)와 후커(Hooker: 맥 데이비스 분)에게 복수를 하기 위해 치밀한 계획을 세운다. 한편 감옥 신세를 지던 곤돌프와 소매치기로 생활을 꾸려가던 후커는 미모의 사기꾼 베로니카(Veronica: 테리 가 분)와 함께 또다른 대형 사기극을 모의한다. 이 사실을 알게 된 로니간은 형사 오말리(O'Malley: 발 에버리 분)와 함께 이들을 소탕하기로 한다.
