한 남자가 정사 도중 얼음 송곳으로 잔인하게 살해당하는 사건이 발생한다. 형사 닉(마이클 더글러스)은 살인 용의자로 여류추리소설가 캐서린 트러멜(샤론 스톤)을 지목하고, 그녀가 거주하는 바닷가의 별장을 찾는다. 닉은 캐서린이 자신에 관한 자료를 모으고 있다는 사실에 놀라고 그녀의 관능미와 자만심은 그에게 충동적인 욕망을 불러일으킨다. 그러던 중 캐서린의 작품 중에서 이번 살인과 동일한 책을 발견, 캐서린을 연행 심문한다. 취조실에 들어온 캐서린은 변호를 받을 권리를 거부하고 심리전과 증거 불충분으로 혐의를 벗지만, 닉크는 그녀가 범인임을 확신하고 계속 수사를 펼쳐나가는데...
