도청 전문가인 해리는 어느 사장의 의뢰로 두 남녀의 대화를 도청하다 이상한 낌새를 챈다. 사장의 부인인 그녀가 살해될지도 모른다는 추측을 하게 된 것. 그는 이 사실을 사장에게 알리고 테이프를 건네주려 하지만 비서인 마틴의 개입으로 실패한다. 그러던 어느 날 친구들과의 모임에서 메레디스라는 낯선 여인이 그에게 접근해온다. 그녀는 해리에게서 테이프를 빼돌리고, 해리는 마틴을 찾아가지만 아무런 말도 하지 못한다. 도청한 대화 내용 중 '일요일 호텔에서 만나자'라는 말을 기억한 해리는 그들의 옆방으로 잠입하는데...

“The Conversation” is not what you’d expect - but, it must be said, is fantastic and nearly flawless in its own right. It is more similar to Antonioni’s “Blow” than DePalma’s, and a sense of eeriness flows throughout the work, bolstered by Gene Hackman’s solemn and brooding performance.
