유럽 순방 중 로마를 방문한 공주 ‘앤’. 끝없는 일정에 지쳐버린 그녀는 한밤중 몰래 침실을 빠져나와 처음으로 자유롭게 로마의 거리를 거닌다. 로마에서 생활 중인 미국인 기자 ‘조 브래들리’. 공주와의 인터뷰를 맡게 된 그는 집으로 돌아가는 길에 술에 취해 잠든 한 여성을 발견하고 하룻밤 재워주게 된다. 다음 날, 신문사에 출근한 ‘조’는 공주와의 인터뷰가 돌연 취소됐다는 소식을 듣게 되고, 신문 1면에서 낯익은 얼굴을 마주하게 되는데…
