Ainda muito abalado com um salvamento mal sucedido que resultou na morte de toda sua equipe, o lendário salva-vidas Ben Randall recebe uma missão que ele não quer aceitar – treinar jovens recrutas para os salvamentos em alto mar. Durante os treinos, ele enfrenta problemas com o aprendiz Jake Fisher, um campeão de natação que esconde um doloroso segredo e parece estar mais interessado em quebrar os recordes de Ben do que salvar vidas.
