1970'lerin ortalarında New York Times muhabiri Sydney Schanberg Kamboçya'da hüküm süren iç savaşı gazetesi adına takip edip yazmak için bu ülkededir. Kendisine gazetenin bölge muhabiri olan, arkadaşı ve tercümanı Dith Pran yardımcı olmaktadır. Amerikan ordusu Vietnam yenilgisinden sonra geri çekilirken Kamboçya'lıların da bölgeden tahliyesini sağlamaktadır. Ancak ailesini helikoptere bindiren Dith Pran görevini terketmeyerek Sydney Schanberg'le birlikte bölgede kalır ve haber yapmayı sürdürürler. Bir dizi trajik habere imza atan ekip ülkedeki durumun daha da vahim bir hal alması ile ABD'ye dönme kararı alır. Ancak bir Kamboçya'lı olan Dith Pran kaçamaz ve korktuğu şey başına gelir,ülkeyi kana bulayan Kızıl Kmerlere esir düşer.
