Ölümcül bir virüs tüm dünyayı tehdit etmektedir. 1996'da 5 milyar kişinin ölümüne neden olan bu virüs, 2035'te dünya nüfusunun yalnızca %1'ini hayatta bırakmıştır. Bu virüsün etkilerinden korunabilmek için insanlar yer altında koloniler kurarak yaşamaya başlar.Bu virüsün üstesinden gelebilmek için mahkumlardan James Cole, zaman makinesiyle geçmişe gönderilir. Yanlışlıkla 1990 yılına gönderilen Cole, bilimadamları için virüs hakkında araştırma yapar.Daha sonra zaman yolculuğunu sürdüren Cole, 1996'da akıl hastanesine alınır. Burada Dr. Kathryn Railly ile tanışan Cole, onu içinde bulundukları duruma inandırmaya başlar.
