小月和四岁的妹妹小梅随父亲搬到乡间生活，以便离因病住院的母亲更近。姐妹俩对新家和周围的一切充满好奇，也逐渐发现这里栖息着只有孩子才能看见的奇妙精灵。小梅在森林深处偶遇巨大而温和的龙猫，随后小月也与它成为朋友，并在龙猫和伙伴们的陪伴下经历了一连串不可思议的奇遇。可当母亲原定回家的计划因病情变化而取消，姐妹俩平静的生活也迎来了一场意外考验……
