Rechtsanwalt Atticus Finch lebt mit seiner Tochter Scout und seinem Sohn Jem in einer Kleinstadt in Alabama. Als im Jahre 1932 der Farbige Tom Robinson angeklagt wird, eine Weiße vergewaltigt zu haben, verwandelt sich der kleine Ort in ein Pulverfass. Schon bald nachdem Atticus zum Pflichtverteidiger für Tom bestellt worden ist, bekommen auch die Kinder die wachsende Intoleranz zu spüren. Nach Kräften bemüht sich der einfühlsame Vater, ihnen die Vorgänge verständlich zu machen. Doch auch er spürt insgeheim, dass es für den blindwütigen Fanatismus und den tiefsitzenden Rassenhass seiner Mitbürger in Kinderseelen keine vorstellbaren Begriffe geben kann. Dabei stehen Atticus Finch und den Kindern die dramatischsten Stunden erst noch bevor .

The part Gregory Peck played in this was reportedly his most favorite role. And he does a marvelous job of it too, as Atticus Finch, the Southern lawyer who agrees to take on the case of a black man falsely accused of rape.
